Project 5

Important Dates
Project IssuedOCTOBER 11, 2013
Project Submission (P3a)OCTOBER 28, 2013 (09.00am)

Project 5. Our first site visit! Wheee~ For Project 5 we were given a few sites, to conduct a site analysis on an existing neighborhood and to suggest amendments to be taken for the betterment of the site. And so the site I'd chosen...

Being  very generous Penangite with transportation, I'd became the driver...

My company on the first trip

In total, I'd visited the site three times to collect the required data. On the first visit, we were even lucky enough to visit the sales office. The sales admin was very kind and patience with us, as we kinda went to the site without any planning beforehand, and we asked him alot of funny questions. We found out that he is actually a senior of us, currently pursuing his masters in USM, what a small world it is. He gave us an insight on how we could get the information we needed, and even gave us a promotional disc of the site. Thank you so much!

This project has exposed us to many new things mostly related to site planning, which is very useful. And we were 'forced' to think on how we could make the existing neighborhood a better place. I'd made some suggestions, mainly focused on the fascilities and presented them in pictorial form with some desciption in my second A2 board.

All in all, it was exhausting (individual or not, it was the 'biggest' project we have done so far) but fun.

Project 4

Important Dates
Project IssuedOCTOBER 07, 2013
Project Submission (P3a)OCTOBER 18, 2013 (09.00am)

Project 4 was actually connected to Project 3B as we are required to produce presentation drawings for the chair model that we'd created.

The boards should be filled with
  1. Plan
  2. Front, rear, left and right elevation
  3. Perspective Drawing
  4. Axonometric Drawing
Since we encountered such a hectic schedule before this (chair modeling and a week of HBP orientation at the same time. BOOM!), this project could be considered 'easy' and was done with ease since we have all the time for it.

So I sort of arranged where each drawings should be located at before I start my works. The only troubling part was to get the measurements accurate when we draw. Axometric drawing too took me quite awhile before I finally got it to look 'proper'. All of the drawings are drawn to a scale of 1:20 except for the perspective drawing. I added in shiny grey silhouette of human figures (one of the requirements) to match the modern and trendy look of the chair. All of my drawings are colored by color pencil as there are many tiny and sleek part which i 'believe' i might spoil if I were to use water color.

The end product...

Plan and the elevations

Axometric and perspective drawing

What I'd learnt? Organise your stuff before you work, that will make your life much easier :D

PROJECT 3B: OBJECTS CONNECTION

Important Dates
Project IssuedSEPTEMBER 30, 2013
Project Submission (P3a)OCTOBER 07, 2013 (09.00am)
We get to design a wooden L-shaped chair for Project 3B. Project 3B was very special to me in two ways.
1.       It was our first project working in groups. And I’m blessed to be able to work with my lovely team mates, Mandy and Raymond.
2.       It was a competition at the same time. The winning team gets to actually have their chair built out in real for a new site in HBP.
The site which is still under construction...

It started with group discussions for the concept and design, which was something I never did experienced during the previous projects. It was nice, being able to communicate ideas to create a design I would never be able to produce by myself. But boy did we went through some arguments in the process, as we were all standing up to our own ‘taste’, but it was all for the best of the project.

One of the first stage sketch

And when we finally get to start produce the model. Unlike individual projects where you can just hide somewhere and do what you have to do, working in groups too means that we need to carry out the works in the studio, and here comes the studio life. I experience my very first late night in the studio, and went back reaching my hostel at 4a.m. Though I believe when I look back when I graduated, this would only be a small case for me.

Our chair was named THE FLOW. The theme was Unity, and what we tried to do was something modern and simple (less is more, yeah!). And the special thing about our design is that it could be made in a single flow, like if you sketch it with a pen it could be done with just one single never-ending stroke. We too used a very bright orange to symbolize our youth and passion.

Overall, this is the project which I enjoy the most working at. Even though it was very rushed as we have our HBP orientation on going at the same time., but it was fun and we managed to work it all out.

Lesson: Three minds is better than one. Thanks to the collaboration and brain storming together, we created something that I would never have been able to do so on my on. Love you guys. <3

PROJECT 3A: OBJECT CREATION

Important Dates
Project IssuedSEPTEMBER 23, 2013
Project Submission (P3a)SEPTEMBER 30, 2013 (09.00am)
Project 3 A offers us a chance to do something other than drawing for studio, which was very nice. The theme given was Harmony and we were free to use any material we desire. The first idea that came to me was to create something of a liquid form,to produce a visual contrast since we are using solid materials. I went through a lot of sketching and researching. I was going to use satay sticks and form them into a wave-like structure.

A lot of cutting and gluing in the meantime…

Sadly, the end product wasn’t what I initially had in my mind. I didn’t finish my sculpture in time as I over-estimated my stamina. This was how it happened. I got stuck in the middle of the process and decided to let myself take some time off (we were off to PIMPIN SISWA) before the submission, and that was the worst decision ever. I was planning for a whole night of (last minute) work before the submission day and I was so drained that I feel asleep, on the floor, with my half complete model (T^T).

This photo was taken in a rush...

The Dewan Kuliah was filled with many brilliant works by my course mates and I was just regretful and somehow angry at myself. I had my lesson learnt through this painful experience to improve my time management.

Project 2

Important Dates
Project IssuedSEPTEMBER 13, 2013
Project Submission (P2a & P2b)SEPTEMBER 23, 2013 (09.00am)

The second project was to produce a drawing of a natural structure and man-made structure that could be found in our beloved university. And so, I started my mini ‘adventure’ in USM by foot. It was wonderful and very relaxing as well, giving me a reason to take my mind off all the lectures just to for once observe and appreciate all the beautiful landscapes and structures around me.

Some photos taken along my little journey…

And next were the topic selection. It was a pain to choose from all the photos I’d taken, since their structures are all very unique and noticeable. Alas, I chosen a papaya tree found somewhere near to the Hamzah Sendut Library. Yes, we actually have papaya treeS in our university premise, kudos for that. I’d selected this as my topic as papaya leaves own a really very dynamic structure, and I believe that this would be a topic less selected by my course mates compared to other structures.

This is the actual photo

And this is my drawing

Natural structure

For man-made structure, I’d selected the car park of our Pusat Sejahtera. This photo was taken from an earthworm’s view. And if you happen to pass by the site that day, you would notice a girl with a big bag and covered with sweats, squatting down on the middle of the road taking a photo with the little camera in her hands.

What I produced,

I added in human figures as it was one of the requirements

What I’d learnt through this project?
1.       Open your eyes and start to embrace the little things around us, the beauty of our nature will amaze you.
2.       I need more practice for water color D:

Project 1

Project 1                         Me, Myself & I
Project Issued         SEPTEMBER 09, 2013
Project Submission       SEPTEMBER 20, 2013

Our kick start in HBP was to draw our portrait and to design our personal logo. It was issued on our first day to our studio class. Am I surprised? Well, no actually, given exposed to all those 'rumors' about how hectic our schedules are gonna be as a member of this school. So all those mental preparations before I actually stepped into USM does help when all those 'rumors' turned out to be quite true.

Okay, back to the project. Drawing human figures ain't something too new for me, but realistic portraits? Not that much.

I had always take drawing living figures to be very challenging, considering all the things like capturing their souls and all into your drawing, stuff like that. So, drawing my very own face? That is certainly something new and challenging. Anyway, this is what I came up with.

I do not have any sketching techniques. The technique I applied was the 'coloring technique'. I just shade where I think is supposed to be dark from what I observed from my reference photo, which was the photo on my matrix card.

The feedback I got from my family and friends were...

'eyes too big'

'neck too small'

'nose very weird'

'mouth senget'

T.T Now I truly believe that the people around me are the ones who can always tell me the truth, BLUNTLY (ouch). Can I shamelessly say that the first two I did it on purpose to somehow 'beautify' myself? (XD)  But I do take all the critiques from them into my head, and vow to do better if I'm ever going to draw my face again.

Designing has always been a harder thing to me compared to drawing. So when it comes to the logo, I had my first headache.

I took a wave form as my inspiration in the design process, as how it had always been in my life. As a child growing up on an island, the sea is something that I'm familiar with. Even after years observing the sea, it still hasn't cease to inspire me every single time.
